Poland to analyze concept of consolidating mining and energy sector firms in 2015

TAG'S: Energy

Poland should prepare analyses of the concept of consolidating coal and energy sectors in 2015, Treasury Minister Wlodzimierz Karpinski told a radio audience on 14 January.

- Analyses aimed at showing to what extent the consolidation would be economically viable and operationally feasible have to be prepared this year, Karpinski said on the public radio. - This has to be coherent with the state energy policy currently prepared by the Economy Minister.

Mining sector enities must be profitable in order for such a tie-up to make sense, he reiterated.

At issue is a government restructuring plan for ailing coal miner Kompania Weglowa, which entails shutting down of four of its fourteen mines and transferring another nine to an SPV to be run by coal trader Weglokoks. It is possible that part of stakes in the prospective SPV could be acquired by energy firms.
