Gaz System to gear up for a MASSIVE Investment in Baltic Pipe

Poland's gas transit operator Gaz-System would need to put EUR 874 mln into construction of the Baltic Pipe project, according to what Gaz-System called very preliminary estimates published part and parcel with transit tariff forecasts.

The sum includes the EUR 442 mln for the Polish link from Danish Zealand to Poland's coastal Niechorze, EUR 91 mln as a portion of the cost of a compressor station in Zealand and EUR 342 mln in related upgrades to Polish infrastructure, the firm indicated.

Just Monday, Poland's plenipotentiary for strategic energy infrastructure Piotr Naimski had indicated that Gaz-System would have to shoulder just over one half of the cost of the Baltic Pipe where total costs were seen at some EUR 1.7 bln.

Danish gas transmission system operator Energinet, which is to realize the project along with Gaz-System, earlier estimated the cost of the pipeline at DKK 12-16 bln (or some EUR 1.6-2.2 bln), with Energinet's investment at around DKK 5-7 bln, depending on the final choice of technology.

Last Friday, June 9, Poland's PM Beata Szydlo and her Danish counterpart Lars Lokke Rasmussen signed a memorandum of understanding on Baltic Pipe.

The pipe is expected to have a capacity of 10 bcm annually.
